- We recently operated special event station OE1XRW/IMD and received about
- three hundred letters for a direct QSL. About a third of them with neither
- an IRC nor a greenstamp, About twenty letters with more than 1$ or more
- than one IRC, the rest with either 1$ or 1 IRC. Air Mail from Austria to
- the USA costs about 1,50$, to Japan about 2$. IRCs can be "cashed in" for
- a stamp worth 60 Cents. We spent more than 200$ to deliver direct QSLs.

-
- No, of course you are not. Note that the original question was
- about mail from the US to Europe, not the other way around. My
- point was that it costs a W manager 50c to mail a letter, so a
- dollar represents a significant profit to a US manager.
-
- What I and probably most managers do if someone sends a card with
- no $$, IRCs or stamps is to return a card via the bureau. I am
- amazed that you received one-third of the requests with no $$/IRCs,
- I receive perhaps 2% without $$/IRCs.
-
- Managers in countries where the mail is so expensive can reduce
- their costs by bulk mailing letters to the US with 29c stamps on,
- and having a friendly W do the mailings. Some European managers
- do this routinely. For mailings to non-US, some managers mail all
- their cards from a neighboring country with lower postal rates.

-
- Sure, pull the diode you have and the set will run through its full
- range. The TS450 is the same. I also have the mod page from some book
- which mis-identifies this diode. Pulled it just to see and away it
- went. I put the diode back in (I have no reason to be outside the ham
- bands).
-
- When I moved here to Singapore, I found out what the other holes are
- for. Our ham bands are not quite the same as those in Canada/US. The
- regulators in various countries take a dim view of ham gear that is
- capable of operating outside the ham bands.
-
- After a quick trip to the Kenwood dealer, he installed another diode
- (sorry did not note which one of the empty spots he used) and *magic* -
- the radio now only transmits on the bands authorised for this part of the
- world.
-
- Now, as a retired regulator, what is it you are going to do with that
- radio once you get it to transmit out of band? . . . ;->

- Something I noticed yesterday, when I was wondering why my fist sounds
- like hell compared to when I was 'into' CW (I *was* one of those whom
- they asked 'you mean that's NOT a keyer?!?).
-
- My Argonaut 509 had a piercing side-tone which was loud regardless
- of receive volume, and quiet T/R gear.
-
- My TR7's sidetone tends to be just below the R/X volume, with
- clattery T/R, if I adjust it so I at least hear the frequency
- between words.
-
- Ergo, I found my brain shutting off much of the time while sending,
- and found that I WASN'T LISTENING TO WHAT I WAS SENDING! Oops. Can't
- do that with a straight key.
-
- As soon as I started listening to the music I was playing again, it
- began once again to sound more like a reel than a Morris dance. So...
- ..obvious as it may sound... listen to what you're sending.
